Ten years after the cult favorite Bubba Ho-Tep—in which an elderly JFK and Elvis Presley bust out of their nursing home to battle an Egyptian mummy—writer-director Don Coscarelli returns with another eccentric horror comedy, this one adapted from a web-serial-cum-novel by David Wong. Unfortunately, the heroes this time around are much more generic, a pair of eye-rolling slackers familiarly typed as the cautious one and his wild, corrupting buddy, and the premise, involving a sinister narcotic called Soy Sauce, owes a heavy debt to William S. Burroughs. Things look up whenever Paul Giamatti, who also served as executive producer, appears onscreen as a rumpled (what else) journalist who figures into the kids' scheming; and there are some cool special-effects sequences (in one scene a character suddenly breaks down into a swarm of cockroaches).
