Jessy Lanza, The-Drum

When: Thu., Jan. 23, 10 p.m. 2014
Price: $15, $12 before midnight
When I first heard Pull My Hair Back (Hyperdub), the recent debut album from Ontario singer Jessy Lanza, the way her wispy, seductive entreaties floated among its squelchy synthesizers and muted beats gave me flashbacks to 80s pop and electronic R&B. Of course, a lot of music has happened in the past three decades, and Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys, who produced the album, takes a lot of it into account: he uses restrained post-techno grooves and the clipped textures of house, and further updates the sound with the sort of jittery beats and synthesizer patterns made famous by Timbaland a decade later. Lanza delivers her hooks with a mixture of knowing slyness and misty soul, and even though she sometimes crosses the line into arch or silly (in “5785021” she sings, “Call me / You know my address”), the album’s sugary thump is too charming for me to resist. —Peter Margasak The-Drum opens.
