I never paid much attention to the Four Seasons. My pop music consciousness starts with the Beatles on the white side and the Temptations on the black, so Frankie Valli may as well have been Frankie Avalon as far as I was concerned. But for about two and a half hours, this juggernaut of a jukebox musical makes Valli and company the most fascinating musicians who ever lived. The book by Rick Elice and Annie Hall coauthor Marshall Brickman follows Valli and his pals from early years evenly divided between music and petty theft through lives that kept them scrambling even when they were on top. And a sharp, hard-sell touring company takes familiar tunes like "Sherry" and "Walk Like a Man" and gives them back the verve they must've had when they were new. —Tony Adler
