A stuffy high school teacher (Fabrice Luchini) latches onto a talented young writing student (Ernst Umhauer) and waits with bated breath for the boy's journal assignments, which detail his sexual pursuit of a classmate's mother (Emmanuelle Seigner). The running joke, stretched to a point of diminishing returns, is that the teacher's airy talk about Chekhov and Flaubert can barely disguise his prurient interest in the boy's tale. The expected punch line—that the kid invented the whole thing—never materializes, so I guess this must be a drama after all. Francois Ozon (Potiche) directed, adapting a play by Juan Mayorga, and Kristin Scott Thomas costars as the teacher's wife, injecting her usual quotient of sniffy amusement. In French with subtitles.
