Influenced by American blues and the regional music of his native Mali, popular vocalist Kar Kar sang the praises of national independence in the early 60s, then dropped out of sight while he worked to support his family. He resumed performing in 1987 but fell silent again after his wife died; a British producer who first searched for him in Mali eventually located him in France, where he was working construction, and since then Kar Kar has issued several CDs. This 2001 video documentary by Jacques Sarasin establishes a relaxed and respectful pace that permits him to include the amazing architecture of Timbuktu as well as the singer's story. Kar Kar's singing is wonderfully expressive, and an improvised song to his wife at her grave site demonstrates the emotional wellspring of his music. In French and Bambara with subtitles. 76 min.
