For his second feature as writer-producer-director-star, Chris Rock has decided to remake one of the classics of the French New Wave: Eric Rohmer's 1972 study of marital infidelity, Chloe in the Afternoon. This may not be as ill considered as it sounds—some of the sharpest material in Rock's last concert special, Never Scared, dealt with the eternal conflict between men and women—but his crowd-pleasing gags tend to clash with Rohmer's sly moral comedy. Rock plays an investment banker at a high-powered Manhattan firm who's begun to feel smothered by family life when into his office walks an old friend (Kerry Washington) who's looking for a job and, possibly, a lover. With Gina Torres, Steve Buscemi, and Edward Herrmann. R, 97 min.
