Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who wrote the black-comedy favorite Bad Santa (2003), make their directing debut with the incredible true story of Steven Jay Russell, a former cop and devout Christian who turned to fraud, passed himself off as a high-level financial officer, and from 1992 to 1998 escaped from four different correctional facilities in the southeast so that he could tend to his passionate romances with men on the outside. As portrayed in the nonfiction book of the same name by former Houston Press reporter Steve McVicker, Russell was a fascinating character and a real puzzle box, but the filmmakers have turned his life into a broad farce with one wocka-wocka gag after another. As comedy writers, they understand that the key to any joke is simplification, but there's nothing simple about the mind of a con man, and in the process of converting his narrative into a laugh machine, they emphatically reduce him to his sexual orientation. With Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, and Leslie Mann.
