British filmmaker Daniel Edelstyn stumbled onto a fascinating story when he began researching the life of his grandmother, a Ukrainian industrialist who fled for the West during the Russian Revolution. This documentary weaves together fanciful dramatizations of her story with a present-day narrative in which Edelstyn tries to revive his family's long-dormant vodka distillery in rural Ukraine. He's a good storyteller but also something of an opportunist: his enthusiasm for the business seems motivated more by self-interest than family pride, and an unnecessary subplot about his marital problems comes off as narcissistic. In English and subtitled Ukrainian.
