Twenty-year-old Winston (Taye Diggs) is looking for more than a fling, but Stella (Angela Bassett), who's twice his age, continues to question his motives—mostly to create the illusion of drama in this adaptation of Terry McMillan's novel. Diggs is the deserving object of the camera's worship, but Bassett seems uncomfortable in her role, gracefully modeling the character's sexy outfits but delivering her lines with utter detachment. All the comedy, tragedy, and various obstacles to romance seem to have been contrived to divert the story from its tendency toward pulp erotica. Too bad. Kevin Rodney Sullivan directed a screenplay by McMillan and Ron Bass, who also collaborated on Waiting to Exhale; with Whoopi Goldberg (1998).
