David Duchovny makes his debut as writer-director with this forgettable coming-of-age story set in the Greenwich Village of the early 70s. The teenage hero (Anton Yelchin) has lost his father, and his mother (Tea Leoni) is chronically depressed; he strikes up a friendship with a retarded janitor at his school (Robin Williams—yikes) and has a running colloquy with an incarcerated black woman who shouts down to him from her cell. There's also a blurry narrative frame in which the grown hero (Duchovny) is living in France as an artist and explaining himself to his wife and child with this familiar reminiscence. Williams's role is a throwback to his high-bathos period of the late 90s, and he digs into it like a bum who's found a Big Mac in the garbage. PG-13, 96 min.
