In this second feature by Deborah Kampmeier (Virgin), Dakota Fanning plays a young girl who's infatuated with Elvis Presley in the rural south of the late 1950s. Fanning's participation in a rape scene generated a rush of controversy even before this debuted at the Sundance film festival in January 2007, and since then the movie has reportedly been reedited. A bewildering slice of southern gothic hokum, it suffers from a weak script, proving that old saw about actors being only as good as the lines they're given. David Morse turns in an eccentric performance as Fanning's father, who's struck by lightning, experiences a baffling change in character, and tries to emulate his daughter. With Robin Wright Penn and Piper Laurie as the girl's cliched fire-and-brimstone grandmother. R, 93 min.
