Max Fleischer made this animated feature in 1941, also known as
Mr. Bug Goes to Town. It was his last, desperate attempt to smash the Disney monopoly, and he packed it with cute anthropomorphism—the sort of thing that never tainted the unbridled sex and violence of his Betty Boop series. The film—about a capitalist beetle who tries to take over Bug Town—is cloying but well crafted. The score (second-rate, alas) is by Frank Loesser and Hoagy Carmichael.
