The members of metal-hardcore institution Converge have more than earned the right to their side projects. Vocalist Jacob Bannon has his Deathwish Inc. label, guitarist Kurt Ballou has his GodCity studio, drummer Ben Koller has the bands All Pigs Must Die and Mutoid Man, and bassist Nate Newton has Doomriders, where he’s front man and guitarist. Doomriders’ recent Grand Blood (Deathwish), is a different kind of hardcore than Converge’s knotty, thrashy, metallic version—it’s less fucking nuts and more rock ’n’ roll, a lot like what Louisville’s stellar scene is hawking. In Converge, Newton delivers most of the backup vocals for the shrieking Bannon, and here he hurls a burly yowl from the pit of his guts into lick-heavy, earnest beard rock (“Mankind”) and straight-up toe-tapping headbangers (“Bad Vibes”). Grand Blood is Doomriders’ third full-length, and the band definitely has a solid, self-contained identity of its own. Sometimes it’s just nice to be the front man—especially when you can play the role so convincingly. —Kevin Warwick High on Fire headlines; Kvelertak and Doomriders open.
