Released in 1972, this East German drama was acclaimed in its day as a groundbreaking depiction of a headstrong, self-sufficient single mother, though it isn't as optimistic as that summary might suggest. Director Egon Günther takes a resolutely clinical approach, as if the heroine were a test subject in modern living, and Jutta Hoffman's Brechtian lead performance discourages easy identification with the character. The episodic story spans two decades, during which time the woman tries to become a nun (and quickly gives up), trains as a civil engineer, and falls in love with three very different men. None of her decisions seems wiser than any of the others; Günther implies that happiness isn't an end goal but an ongoing experiment. In German with subtitles.
