This fascinating British documentary by Gary Hustwit uses the 50th anniversary of the Swiss typeface Helvetica to consider a half century of graphic design, exploring the tension between the orderly postwar modernists and the individualists who came after them. For a movie about typography it's surprisingly passionate. An assortment of designers—Massimo Vignelli, Wim Crouwell, Matthew Carter, Erik Spiekermann, David Carson—deliver strong opinions, and Hustwit's occasional montages of Helvetica in daily life illustrate the awesome power of typography to subliminally shape public consciousness.
