Noted war photographer Danfung Dennis directed this sobering documentary about Nathan Harris, a U.S. marine sergeant critically wounded in Afghanistan in 2009. Footage of Harris's regiment overseas, shot in the weeks leading up to his injury, are intercut with scenes of him readjusting to civilian life in North Carolina several months later. This structure persuasively depicts combat and recovery as two sides of the same struggle, and Dennis strengthens his argument by maintaining a constant perspective throughout: the camera is always within a few feet of the subject, and the unsettling sound design (created from Dennis's field recordings of the Afghan front) suggests that a threatening presence is always nearby. In English and subtitled Pashtu and Dari.
