A major disappointment from Paul Schrader, director of the effectively severe Blue Collar and writer of the effectively obsessional Taxi Driver. George C. Scott plays a variation on the De Niro character from the latter film—instead of a lone psycho, he's an institutionalized one, the Bible-thumping midwestern father of a teenage girl who has been seduced and absorbed by the porno underground. Scott heads off to the Sodom of the west coast to find her. The hysterical, outraged tone is not supported by the meandering script, which indulges in the gooey sensationalism of a TV movie on child prostitution. Insiders will recognize all of the allusions to The Searchers, few of which are justified. With Peter Boyle and Season Hubley (1979).
