Panoramic views of the Qandil Mountains supply the backdrop for this 2006 road movie about an elderly, revered Kurdish-Irani musician and his sons, bound for a concert in Kurdish Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The old man's stubborn streak makes their journey even more perilous: he flaunts the Iranian law that bans female singers by smuggling his muse in a hidden compartment of the tour bus. The suspicion and contempt the band encounters along the way symbolize the Kurds' historical sufferings, but the movie has many comic moments courtesy of the eager bus driver, who keeps putting his foot in his mouth. The nonprofessional cast is highly persuasive under the sure hand of director Bahman Ghobadi (A Time for Drunken Horses). In Kurdish and Farsi with subtitles. 108 min.
