Drury Lane Oakbrook used to be the go-to theater for unimaginative, dull, chintzy-looking stagings of classic and contemporary musicals. Over the past few seasons, though, new producers and a new artistic team have reenergized the place. The current show, a revival of the Tony-winning musical based on John Waters's 1988 movie, is yet another in their series of high-spirited, intelligently executed crowd-pleasers. Director Tammy Mader hasn't just assembled a great ensemble of triple threats led by effervescent Lillian Castillo as plucky, plus-size heroine Tracy Turnblad. She's also deployed them in a production packed with full-throated singing, full-throttle dancing, and flat-out funny comic acting. —Jack Helbig
