A terrific idea—remaking Stanley Kramer's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? (1967) with the races reversed—generates a pleasant but tepid comedy in the hands of Kevin Rodney Sullivan (Barbershop 2). Bernie Mac plays a black banker in middle-class Crawford, New Jersey, who's chagrined when his beloved daughter brings home white Manhattan investment broker Ashton Kutcher. (They replace Spencer Tracy and Sidney Poitier, so both races have grounds for redress.) Screenwriters David Ronn, Jay Scherick, and Peter Tolan preserve the original movie's feel-good liberalism, but its literate dialogue has given way to watered-down shtick from the Meet the Parents school of in-law comedy. With Zoe Saldana, Judith Scott, and Hal Williams. PG-13, 97 min.
