Watching a comedian grow old is always sad, but in the case of Adam Sandler it's abject. In this starring vehicle from his lazy, crony-ridden Happy Madison Productions, five old pals (Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and the inevitable Rob Schneider) reunite with their families at a lakeside retreat to rehearse the old doody and peepee gags, work through their perfunctory character conflicts, and grow solemn at the sappy music cues. Age-inappropriate behavior is constantly ridiculed (Schneider's character is married to an old woman, and one of the children is still breast-feeding at four), yet Sandler, who cowrote the screenplay, gives a pass to his clique of middle-aged men viciously razzing each other like junior high students. Beneath all the forced hilarity lies an awful fear of aging—and Sandler is only 43! This is gonna be rough. Dennis Dugan directed; with Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, and Maya Rudolph.
