Mike Newell (Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings and a Funeral) directed this faithful adaptation of the Dickens novel, about a young orphan (Jeremy Irvine) who becomes a gentleman thanks to the help of a mysterious benefactor (Ralph Fiennes). Admirable performances from a large cast successfully flesh out the Dickensian world (Helena Bonham Carter is perfectly creepy as the deranged Miss Havisham). David Nicholls's screenplay, like his previous efforts One Day and Starter for 10, may be inaccessible to those who haven't read the book; vital explanations are glazed over in an attempt to fit all 400 pages into two hours, and as a result the film feels rushed and confusing.
