Lacking money for college, a willowy high school grad (Christine Evangelista) moves in with her quarrelsome gay brother (Ivan Sandomire) in Manhattan and lands a job waiting tables at a comedy club. Her boss (Jerry Adler) is a recovering alcoholic, which gives her the idea to work up her own act by posing as a cokehead and using a 12-step group as her test audience. From this slender premise, writer-director Daniel Schechter develops a modest but touching coming-of-age story (2007); as the young woman becomes romantically involved with a recovering addict (Michael Mosley), she faces her own demons by revisiting a long-buried family tragedy. Evangelista is rather weak but gets good support from Kevin Corrigan, Ann Dowd, and Alan Ruck. 88 min.
