Disney's recent formula of giving a standard sports-team story a vague political gloss worked pretty well in Miracle, about the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. But this drama about an interracial college basketball squad in the mid-60s never gets off the bench. Josh Lucas, charismatic as ever, plays coach Don Haskins, whose 1966 Texas Western team broke the last color barrier in intercollegiate sports by starting an all-black lineup at the NCAA championships against the Kentucky Wildcats. First-time director James Gartner observes all the rituals—the coach busting chops, the team sneaking out to party—but the players are indifferently characterized and the civil rights story has a fake Black History Month feel. With Derek Luke and Jon Voight. PG, 106 min.
