Gregory La Cava's bizarre Depression fantasy (1933), in which a cigar-chomping politician (Walter Huston) is elected president and promptly visited by the Divine Light. The president cleans up his act, fires his cronies, and puts the country on the road to protofascist recovery. A brilliant comedy director, La Cava finds some hint of satire in the material, but much of it is harrowingly sanctimonious. A curiosity worth seeing. 87 min.
