Master puppeteer Michael Montenegro performs six solo works in this latest offering from Theatre Zarko. The show is billed as "kid friendly," but Montenegro's gifts—including, first and foremost, the ability to imbue inanimate objects with a poignant sense of longing—lend themselves to themes better understood with age: loss, memory, the aching fragility of a beautiful moment. Even the comic pieces have a melancholy undertow, as when a clever mouse outsmarts the Grim Reaper. Still, I'd say it's worth the risk of bumming out the kiddies to see Montenegro's singularly affecting creations, which include a pair of hand puppets dancing a waltz and a lopsided papier-mache head reading a much-treasured letter. —Zac Thompson
