Fonema Consort

When: Wed., March 19, 7:30 p.m. 2014
Lately Chicago has seen a veritable explosion of adventurous new-music ensembles, but Fonema Consort is alone among these upstarts in its focus on vocal work—challenging, forward-looking vocal work. Led by composer Pablo Chin, Fonema also plays instrumental pieces, but they’re usually linked or related in some clever way to the vocal music on any given program. This one, called “Singing Instruments,” deliberately blurs the lines between instruments and voices. Kaija Saariaho’s “Laconisme de L’aile” collides vocal phonemes with swooping flute lines that sound remarkably voicelike, and Georges Aperghis’s theatrical work “Les Sept Crimes de L’amour” enlists a soprano to alternately drive or serve as the focus of interactions between a clarinetist and a percussionist. Also on the program are world premieres by Greek composer Stratis Minakakis and Chicagoan Katherine Young. —Peter Margasak
