“Time Is on My Side” is the theme song of this incredibly naive 1998 thriller, in which voice-overs are poured on thick, and distorted, grainy inserts show what things look like from the point of view of a demon (which reveals its presence in the possessed when they sing a few bars of the Stones' hit with some of the pronouns reversed). Denzel Washington is admirable in the role of a dauntless detective investigating murders and metaphysics, but his sincerity can't carry the outlandish plot—you just wonder what a guy like him is doing in a movie like this. Director of photography Newton Thomas Sigel invokes the heavenly by bathing interiors in a gorgeous glisten, but its use is so indiscriminate the motif becomes incidental to the silly story. The first half of this movie holds some promise, but time is not on its side. Written by Nicholas Kazan, and directed by Gregory Hoblit.
