Richard Marquand's 1981 thriller weirdly shifts archetypes and audiences midway through, from the male-oriented sociopathic loner fantasy (Day of the Jackal, etc) to the female deadly lover syndrome (Suspicion, etc), and never makes sense of the change, though Marquand's dogged determination scores a point or two in each genre. Still, almost two hours of his bland center framing, muddy palette, and ping-ponging dialogue direction is hard to take; the film's solemnity is both a strength and a severe limitation. With Donald Sutherland, Kate Nelligan, Ian Bannen, and Christpher Cazenove. 113 min.
