With feel-good icons Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks on board, you know this 9/11 drama will travel a safe emotional arc: loss, grief, confrontation, healing, big hug. The central character is a precocious schoolboy (Thomas Horn) whose father (Hanks) leaped to his death from the burning World Trade Center. After discovering a mysterious key in dad's closet, the boy sets off on a quixotic investigation to find the lock. This precious story line, adapted from a novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, keeps shriveling up against the backdrop of a traumatized city; only gaunt Max von Sydow, as a mute old man who accompanies the young hero on his rounds, supplies the grave authority the premise demands. This is one of those movies in which a child's heartrending drawings, discovered by a loving parent (Bullock), are supposed to provide a warm, magical glaze to the grown-up tale. Stephen Daldry (The Reader) directed; with Viola Davis and John Goodman.
