The son of a man who climbed Mount Everest in 1953 is determined to follow in his father's footsteps, and this 1998 Omnimax account of his journey with two colleagues and several assistants and cinematographers smoothly combines first-person storytelling with the virtual-reality aspects of special-format filmmaking. It's filled with gently drawn characters, breathtaking scenery, and gripping suspense; picture-in-picture and other attention-getting editing and cinematographic techniques are deftly blended with a spare narration (delivered by Liam Neeson) and extensive sound bites from the climbers. This thrilling, thought-provoking story proves that sensation, drama, history, and science can be marvelously combined in Omnimax—a format that's often used for something more like an amusement-park ride than a movie.
