Naomi Watts reaches a Kidman-esque level of hysteria in this strident showbiz satire about a young actress navigating shark-infested LA. The project has an interesting history: Watts and writer-director Scott Coffey collaborated on a no-budget, verite-style digital short in 2001, followed it with three more as Watts became a major star, and made this digital feature at the same time she was making The Ring Two. Most of the gags misfire, though some scenes are memorably tawdry (a fly-by-night acting class in which the students impersonate animals while the teacher snorts coke in the bathroom). Watts takes advantage of the opportunity to parody her own furiously aggressive performances, and she's even scarier here than in I Heart Huckabees. With Coffey, Rebecca Rigg, Mark Pellegrino, and Chevy Chase.
