The Wizard of Oz originally included an embarrassing jitterbug number that would have dated the film terribly and was wisely left on the cutting-room floor. No such restraint marks this wisecracking revision of the Cinderella story, closely modeled on The Princess Bride but more often seeming like Mystery Science Theater 3000, with an FM-rock score already dully familiar from TV commercials. The title heroine (Anne Hathaway) is cursed by a spell that forces her to obey any verbal command, which her wicked stepsister uses against her as they vie for a handsome prince (Hugh Dancy). This has wit and energy to burn, but I can't call it escapism, because tackiness and snarkiness are among the things I most need to escape. Tommy O'Haver directed; with Minnie Driver, Joanna Lumley, Eric Idle, Parminder K. Nagra, and Princess Bride alum Cary Elwes. PG, 95 min.
