Eagulls

When: Tue., June 10, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $12
By now Leeds five-piece Eagulls have outgrown the up-yours open letter they posted on their blog in 2013, after their inaugural run-in with the maddening circus of SXSW—their hate list included “beach bands,” “disgusting afrobeat sounds,” and “people who take drugs but have never met a drug dealer” (still a pretty funny burn). They’ve left it behind not only because they’re brash, fuck-the-system kids who probably wrote the letter on a whim, but also because their band is legit—they’re too good to be defined solely by something they posted on the Internet. Case in point? Their self-titled full-length debut, released on Partisan earlier this year, is an anthemic, brooding rock record chock-full of sharp hooks and drenched in dark, noisy reverb—it’s rousing enough to fill a venue with two balconies (and then some). It would’ve been funny if Eagulls’ endearing bad-boy attitude—and the letter that introduced most folks to it—had been part of some sort of diabolical PR scheme, but they’re obviously better suited to being simple smart-asses with big-time skills. —Kevin Warwick
