Apart from Alfred Hitchcock, I can't think of a director with more murder in his heart than Danny DeVito: most of his movies (Throw Momma From the Train, The War of the Roses, Death to Smoochy) involve homicide conspiracies. This characteristically lowbrow comedy stars Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore as a married couple who impulsively buy a Brooklyn duplex and, driven crazy by the nonagenarian Irish widow living above them, decide to do her in. Larry Doyle and John Hamburg's script is full of holes, but this is still pretty damn funny—thanks mostly to Barrymore, who seems to be retracing Lucille Ball's trajectory from sex kitten to comedienne. With Harvey Fierstein, Swoosie Kurtz, and Wallace Shawn. 89 min.
