Few live performances are flawless—that's their charm. Still, the temptation is there for a well-funded, well-oiled dream factory like Marriott Theatre to turn out superslick, soulless productions. Which is one reason why this revival of Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen's 1981 backstage musical is so impressive. Director/choreographer Marc Robin protects the messy, all-too-human core of a fragmented, conflicted, fascinating show about the rise of an R&B girl group. Parts of Dreamgirls are certainly dedicated to glitter and glam—but other parts offer a clear-eyed look at the dirty side of the music biz (racism, payola) in the 1960s and '70s. Robin has put together an impressive ensemble, led by Raena White as talented, flawed diva Effie and Britney Coleman as a perfect embodiment of the Diana Ross/Beyonce golden girl. Eric LaJuan Summers also sizzles as a would-be James Brown. —Jack Helbig
