For his 2009 solo album, Regression (Ideal), Wolf Eyes mayhem merchant Nate Young gave his creepy, unsettled synthesizer excursions titles like "Dread," "Sweating Sickness," and "Sleep Anxiety." His slowly unfolding, reverb-refracted four- or five-note patterns rippled with ominous darkness, and every time I listened to them I found myself getting a little depressed and paranoid. His new album, Stay Asleep (NNA), refines that sound impressively—it's bigger and sharper edged—but the unfussy simplicity and profound sense of anxiety remain. This stuff might have worked as a soundtrack for an early John Carpenter film, though the audience probably would've ended up catatonic under their chairs. WIthin his music's harrowing gloom, Young creates a surprisingly rich sonic palette, with metallic crashes intersecting reverberant long tones and eerily squelching analog-synth quivers. On the final track, "Collapse," he adds minimalist piano, while his Wolf Eyes partners John Olson and Aaron Dilloway contribute electronic winds and tapes, respectively. —Peter Margasak Drainolith headlines; Nate Young and Ratatosk open.
