Al (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is a college junior smitten with freshman Imogen (Julia Stiles) and struggling with the stereotypical male and female behavior that plagues this relentlessly adolescent romantic comedy. Is he in love with her if he's in lust with another woman (a convenient symbol, since she works in the sex-film industry)? Is Imogen in love with Al if she flirts with another man (a transparent poseur who calls himself Jim Morrison)? Prinze and Stiles regularly talk to the camera, but that doesn't make their characters self-aware. And the frequent appearance of microphones in shots doesn't seem like a deliberate reference to low-budget filmmaking, though the hero's best friend is an actor-director—a cartoony young cynic who makes porn and costume epics and frequently challenges the starry-eyed hero's notions about love. Written and directed by Kris Isacsson. 91 min.
