The two acts of this Mammals show are utterly disjointed—but maybe that's because they represent the two authors' disparate sensibilities. Act one depicts a tender, fumbling romance set in the sort of kindly, quirky rural locale preferred by rising playwright Randall Colburn. In act two, Bob Fisher's brand of fever-dream violence and obsession takes over, and things between the lovers get freaky fast. So what if the characters, Frank and Marie, come across as different people from part to part, or if dilemmas introduced in the first act drop by the wayside in the second? You're still getting an Appalachian Gothic twofer from a pair of Chicago's freshest, strangest playwrights. As Frank, Gabe Garza paws at the heartstrings with a puppylike ardor that's hard to reject. —Keith Griffith
