Concision has served Britt Daniel well in Spoon—lean instrumentation, pared-down lyrics, only the briefest of "solos"—and he's found fellow travelers in guitarist-keyboardist Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs) and drummer Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks). Together they're Divine Fits, and their recent debut album, A Thing Called Divine Fits (Merge), purges all unnecessary gestures, so that even the driving synth-pop song "My Love Is Real" has a precise, almost robotic starkness that complements the Bowie-esque quiver in Boeckner's voice. On my first listen through the record, Boeckner's singing style seemed like a counterpoint to Daniel's clipped soulfulness, but as I spent more time with it, they started to sound more and more similar (they wrote some of the songs collaboratively), like part of a full-grown whole instead of just a couple guys with a side project. —Peter Margasak Cold Cave opens.
