The family animation Despicable Me (2010) proved superior to its ilk thanks to some vivid action sequences and a screenplay that combined actual emotion with surprisingly smart comedy (the occasional fart joke notwithstanding). In this disposable sequel the original movie's supervillain-turned-family-man (given voice by Steve Carrell) tries to track down a mysterious criminal; directors Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin deserve credit for not rehashing the basic ideas of their first effort, but they never really expand upon its unique universe either. The only characters developed here are the cyclopean yellow monsters known as the Minions, whose irreverent tirades recall the anarchic slapstick of Chico Marx and early Looney Tunes.
