This thriller is like milk that's about to turn: it looks OK but smells a little dodgy. Clive Owen plays a harried Chicago adman whose relationship with his wife is being smothered by their daughter's rising medical expenses. On a commuter train he meets a leggy financial adviser (Jennifer Aniston) who's unhappy with her husband, and soon they're headed for a tryst at a cheap hotel—only to be attacked by a violent intruder (Vincent Cassel). What follows is a variant on the “ticking clock” formula, with the hero racing against time to meet a blackmailer's demands and save his family from the truth. Stuart Beattie (Collateral) wrote the preposterous script, Mikael Hafstrom directed, and in some scenes London doubles for Chicago (what, Toronto was booked?). R, 110 min.
