Under William Wyler's directorial hand, Sidney Kingsley's popular play became a series of vignettes about real, genuine life in the Hollywoodized, ready-made streets (where little girls stick their tongues out at little boys, little boys stick their tongues out at cops, and young men say things like “What chance has a guy got in a place like this?”). This 1937 film stars Sylvia Sidney, Joel McCrea, Humphrey Bogart, and the Dead End Kids (who later became the East Side Kids and then the Bowery Boys). 93 min.
