No movie with access to the Cole Porter songbook could be a complete waste of time, but this biopic of the great tunesmith by producer-director Irwin Winkler is all upholstery and no chair. Screenwriter Jay Cocks (last seen trying to prop up Gangs of New York) appropriates the death-as-command-performance conceit from Bob Fosse's All That Jazz, with Porter (Kevin Kline, who's excellent) and his heavenly escort (Jonathan Pryce) sitting in an empty house watching Porter's life play out onstage. Various pop singers make cameo appearances interpreting Porter classics, ranging from swell (Sheryl Crow, Natalie Cole) to awkward (Robbie Williams, Elvis Costello) to nightmarish (Alanis Morissette singing “Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love”). PG-13, 125 min.
