A busy surgeon (Kevin Kline) and his tetchy wife (who else but Diane Keaton) marry off their daughter (Elisabeth Moss) at their vacation home in the Rockies, but the postwedding festivities are spoiled when the doctor loses the wife's beloved mutt during a wilderness stroll. Because the writer-director is yak-a-thon specialist Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill, Grand Canyon), the movie devolves into a succession of dull walk-and-talks as the couple and their guests (Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins, Mark Duplass) pair off and search for the damn dog. Initially this struck me as something you'd take your grandmother to see, but by the end it seemed more like something your grandmother would take her grandmother to see. Meg Kasdan, the director's wife, cowrote the script; with Sam Shepard.
