The new wave of Japanese chillers (Ringu, Ju-on) has generated a series of profitable Hollywood remakes (The Ring, The Grudge), none of which has topped the originals. This one comes closest, favoring character development over rude scares, though given the narrow parameters of the genre, it's not really a worthwhile trade. Jennifer Connelly—Nicole Kidman's only serious rival at playing the beautifully insane—and her six-year-old daughter move into a cruddy high-rise on Roosevelt Island in New York City, where they're plagued by a ghost and some malevolently bad plumbing. Tim Roth has a great part as their attorney, a guy who works out of his car, and John C. Reilly and Pete Postlethwaite are every renter's worst nightmare as the shady landlord and passive janitor. Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) directed. PG-13, 103 min.
