"You have killed God!" the biologist Thomas Huxley tells Charles Darwin in this British historical drama. "And I, for one, say good riddance to the vindictive old bugger." Darwin can hardly be said to share the sentiment and, left alone to confront the social implications of his theory of evolution, promptly vomits in fear. So few movies these days concern themselves with ideas of any sort that a drama like this one, about a man humbled by the consequences of his own intellectual breakthrough, seems even more powerful. Paul Bettany gives a quiet but deeply felt performance as Darwin, whose brave new concept of humanity is complicated by the Christian ideals of his wife (Jennifer Connelly) and, even more painfully, the fatal illness of his loyal, keenly intelligent ten-year-old daughter (Martha West). The script was adapted from Randal Keynes's biography Darwin, His Daughter, and Human Evolution; Jon Amiel directed. PG-13, 108 min.
