Put this one back on the shelf, and walk away. Sophie Kinsella's vapid chick-lit novel about a working woman and her mounting debt has been pulled this way and that by action producer Jerry Bruckheimer in an effort to turn it into The Devil Wears Prada. The book lightly satirized the various rationalizations we all use to buy more stuff—this is a good investment, this will save me money in the long run, this is too good a bargain to pass up—and captured the dread of overdrawn credit. But this rom-com is too busy and flush with fabulous clothes for such modest experiences to register. P.J. Hogan directed; with Isla Fisher as the title addict, Hugh Dancy as her boss/love interest, and an assortment of familiar faces whose brief appearances feel like merchandise too (Joan Cusack, John Goodman, John Lithgow, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lynn Redgrave, Julie Hagerty). PG, 100 min.
