Chris Stamey & the Fellow Travellers, Brett Harris

When: Wed., June 26, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $12-$22
Pop auteur and producer Chris Stamey doesn’t make records often—his reunion with the dB’s on 2012’s Falling Off the Sky (Bar/None) and February’s solo album Lovesick Blues (Yep Roc), his first in eight years, pretty much qualify as a bumper crop of new music from him. This week he’s in town for two performances: he plays under his own name tonight, and on Friday he participates in the re-creation of Big Star’s Third at Park West. On the ballad-heavy Lovesick Blues he’s in an introspective, mellow mood (the title track is an original, not the Hank Williams classic), surrounding sweet-toned acoustic guitar with delicate harmony singing and melancholy strings and winds. The melodies are beautiful, but by the end the album feels a bit soft and lumpy—thankfully a few songs, most notably “Astronomy,” erupt with real fury. For this show Stamey will be accompanied by a “chamber group” of sorts, which will include cello, viola, flute, acoustic piano, acoustic and electric guitars, and percussion; they’ll play arrangements of songs from Lovesick Blues, some brand-new material, and tracks from the dB’s as well as Stamey’s earlier solo records. —Peter Margasak Brett Harris opens.
