The inspiration for this unironic movie about a social irony is “Chopper,” aka Mark Brandon Read, author of From the Inside and a self-styled notorious criminal who's spent much of his life in Australian prisons. It opens with a title asserting that it's not biography but drama, and as the story unfolds, the character representing Read keeps reminding us—and the journalists, law enforcers, and potential victims he talks to—that he's playing fast and loose with the facts of his crimes. Calculated or compulsive, his distortions both enhance his reputation and obscure the evidence against him. The connection between his boasting about killing and killing so he can boast about it—a simple idea, even a trendy one—is made beautifully insidious. Written and directed by Andrew Dominik; with stand-up comedian Eric Bana. 90 min.

Sorry there are no showtimes for Chopper on Saturday, November 7.
